oflongago: (That promise I made with you)

It’s not a matter of “if,” it’s just a matter of “when.”

Things had been hectic lately.

A few years ago, Mithos wouldn’t have thought that his family would be in the state it was in. It wasn’t that long ago that they were outcasts and lucky to find a place to settle. Now, in this place where they had finally found a home, the turnabout their life had taken was much too sharp. Physical power was something anyone could attain, something that made everyone equals. Political power was something else, and purely physical prowess meant nothing.

That’s where they went wrong. People could ignore them if they were in the shadows. Once they began gaining prestige and political power, they were dangerous.

Even if he wasn’t directly involved, even if his sister wasn’t directly involved, they were still part of it. They were a part of the family, after all.

But Mithos didn’t realize - none of them realized - the extent of the anger felt towards them until Martel was attacked. Martel, his sister, his kind, sweet sister who cared about everyone—she was the one who was stabbed and left bleeding out, lucky to make it home.

Martel was still bedridden when they made the choice. Of course, Mithos was trained with a sword, but his parents decided that more strength was better; a fourteen year old boy can’t properly defend himself, and there’s no reason to doubt they wouldn’t come after him. To kill, to kidnap, to attack—

And that was what brought Mithos here to grand entryway of their family home. His parents, of course, weren’t there despite being the ones who hired the person before him. A boy not much larger than him with blond hair. Mithos was sure he had already been informed of his duties: to stay at Mithos’s side and watch for any suspicious persons. It was vague, but it wasn’t as though they could say who or what to look out for. No, that would hurt their image.

Mithos sighed. He didn’t want to fault this person, but when he was told he was getting a bodyguard, he thought it would be someone bigger, someone who looked chiseled with years of combat experience. Not...someone who looked like he could be a classmate.

“You know, I can use a sword, too.”

"Huh..."

They say that first impressions are everything. It was safe to assume Nazuna never knew who they just as much as he knew he messed up that first impression. He stiffened with the realization, eyes briefly flickering down in thought.

He maintained focus since his arrival but there was no anticipating being addressed... suddenly? No, that wasn't it. Regardless, he was caught off guard when it was plain as day that he would have to interact with the subject of interest. The person he was facing head on.

They were strangers, his only knowledge stemming from facts recently given to him. There was no room for opinions or any decison making to suggest that Nazuna was to like that person or not. It wasn't a matter of like or seeing something as right or wrong that set everything into motion. He was given the role to defend one particular person who wasn't directly linked to the, um... the...

It didn't look it but Nazuna wasn't an absolute failure. He had went through years of training, being the top of the class, but he had yet to experience the reality of being a guard. There had always been a safety net of it all being practice. But now there were risks. And perhaps having a lesson in public speaking would have done wonders. He wasn't much of anything at that moment despite having a sheath at each thigh.

Clearing his throat, Nazuna shifted his feet with his eyes returning to his new lord— master?

"Well, that's good. I mean... a lot of people don't have general knowledge."

There was a pause. It sounded like too much of a pat on the head, didn't it? Eternally panicked, Nazuna rubbed at his mouth before picking out more words.

"Hopefully you won't need to worry about using your skills. But it's important to keep too."

Nope, that was still bad.

"We could practice so you won't forget."
